A Brief Biography of Charles Dickens



Charles Dickens was a British novelist, journalist, and social commentator who wrote such beloved classic novels as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. He was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England, and died on June 9, 1870, in Gad's Hill Place, Kent, England. He began his career as a journalist and published his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, in 1836. He wrote 15 novels and numerous short stories, articles, and essays. He was also a vocal critic of his time's social and economic conditions, and his work often highlighted the plight of the poor and working class. He is considered one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era, and his work continues to be widely read and studied today.

The novel was a stark portrayal of the conditions faced by the poor and working classes in Victorian England and was a significant success.


Another of his most famous works is "A Christmas Carol", which was published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Through these visits, Scrooge is shown the error of his ways and learns to become kinder and more compassionate. The story is set during Christmas, and it helped to popularize the holiday during the Victorian era.


His other novels like "David Copperfield", "Great Expectations" and "A Tale of Two Cities" are also highly acclaimed and considered masterpieces.
